The Portuguese Way is a hiking route linking the major town of Ponte de Lima to Santiago de Compostela, along the beautiful old Saint James path. Every day is a different scenery, offering country side views, towns and cities rich in culture and filled with the camino spirits. Churches, monuments, old crosses will tell the history of this less trodden way until you arrive at Obradoiro Square, just in front of Saint James Cathedral, in the heart of Santiago the Compostela. You will experience the true way, away from the crowds and near yourself discover.

Day-by-Day

1: Arrival at Porto airport and transfer to Ponte de Lima

Overnight: Hotel 3*  Império do Norte Hotel
Meals:

Our Guide will welcome you at Porto Airport and brieff you, being the documentation and gps handover.
After you will have a transfer to Ponte de Lima.
 
Ponte de Lima is a medieval town in where you might discover old streets, ramparts and squares.
the town sits by the river with same name was from roman time the only way up to the north.Tomorrow will be your way too.
Today take your time and enjoy! Visit the old town, and across the bridge the Portuguese toy museum.


2: Hike from Ponte de Lima to Rubiães

Overnight: Guesthouse  Repouso do Peregrino (Rubiães)
Meals: Breakfast

The day starts from the doorstep of your lodging and goes towards north by the old roman bridge.
You must know that these are the first steps of all Pilgrims since roman times.
You wont just walk but be part of the history.
The way goes up to the highest point of the entire hiking program, cross the beautiful countryside of northern Portugal and delight your eyes with the landscape.
Away from the big roads and thru little way you’ll get to Rubiães your first night stop.

3: Hike from Rubiães to Valença do Minho

Overnight: Hotel 3*  Lara Hotel (Valença do Minho)
Meals: Breakfast

After the breakfast, you start in direction to the Church of Rubiães and after by the hiltop to a litle Sanctuary of São Bento da Porta Aberta.
Take a deep breath and from there the way will drop towards Valença do Minho.
The day is shorter and easier than yesterday.
From wooden areas to agricultural field, from surfaced to dirt tracks the scenery varies a lot and will offer you a gorgeous way to the border town of Valença do Minho.
There is the last Portuguese fortress, from XVIII century, make sure you will explore the old town.And look toward Spain from the rampart of Valença…

4: Hike from Valença do Minho to Porriño

Hiking along small fortresses, passing under old doors, travel in medieval streets and crossing over ancient bridges.
today you might feel like a middle age pilgrimage. The times has changed but the atmosphere, the landscape or the people lifestyle did not.
Very soon you arrive in Galiza, Spain. It's just across the bridge and the River Minho.
On the way you might enjoy the town of Tuy and spend some time in the center, the Cathedral is a must see.
Soon after Tuy you´ll enter a path along river Louro, and follow along a wooded area avoiding the old stretch thru the industrial area.
after a beautiful walk along the river, you find your accomodation in Porriño and have a well deserved rest…

5: Hike from Porriño to Redondela/Soutoxusto

Overnight: Hotel 2*  Santo Apostolo Hotel (Redondela-Galiza)
Meals: Breakfast

The challenge for today goes towards Redondela following close to the national road.
Up to the hill the hiking will be rewarding because at 250 meter high you can see the horizon, feel the wind and take some great photos over Redondela and Ria de Vigo.
Until the town your way goes down and where you have opportunity to pass in some rural vilages full of local spirit.
You will sleep off the town, but before enjoy the monuments in the center or have a beer while the sun goes down.

6: Hike from Redondela/Soutoxusto to Pontevedra

Overnight: Hotel 2*  Avenida Hotel (Pontevedra)
Meals: Breakfast

Your adventure starts just of the beautiful town of Redondela and will be just gorgeous until the end.
Imagining from the ocean like fjord scenery, step inland into kilometers of wooden forested area.
Part of the path is an old roman causeway. All of this following the camino spirit and atmosphere where people are friendly and hospitable.
Passing Arcade village and going up the small hill soon you arrive in Pontevedra.
The city is wonderful and full of history and supeb Esplanades to a have a delicious meal.
Delight yourself wandering thru the granitic steets and medieval atmosphere of Pontevedra.

7: Hike from Pontevedra to Caldas de Reis

Overnight: Hotel 2*  Rosalia Hotel (Padron)
Meals: Breakfast

After your breakfast, feeling full energized you will start one of the longest day. The experience goes through old railways, rural paths and wetlands. Place of hundreds of species and biodiversity, you will be surrounded by some of the most beautiful and natural landscapes. Perfect to explore with all of your senses step by step you get closer to Caldas dos Reis, the final destination of the day. A few kilometers from Caldas de Reis there is the waterfall and the watermills system of Barrosa river, take a look before check in your hotel.

8: Hike from Caldas de Reis to Padrón

Your eighth day begins with nice walk along agriculture fields following a gravel track.
Toward Valga the path goes into a very scenic scenery by the river and in the shede of a forest.
Out of this forest and along little roads you reach Pontecesures a place full of religious architecture.
Crossing the river reach Padrón your last stop before Santiago de Compostela.the town have beautiful gardens and monuments all around.
Look for typical food and delight you with great dinner.

9: Hike from Padrón to Santiago de Compostela

Last day of pilgrimation!! Santiago is just a few quilometers away.
Santiago awaits you just 24km ahead.
The day to reach Santiago de Compostela is probably the longest one. Not dew to the kilometers, but mindset.
The path leaves the town of Padrón going up north to the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria la Mayor.
The episcopal center before its transfer to Santiago de Compostela in the Xc.
Soon you reach the outskirts of Santiago. And the path turns to a more urban walk as you reach the Cathedral.

10: Free day at Santiago de Compostela

Today is dedicated to walk along the old town center.
If you want to stamp your pilgrim passport is also the best time to do it and find the certificate.
Santiago is well worth of a day, from the old part and the related religious buildings.
But there are newer atraction like the newly build museum of the Galician people.
Have some time to enjoy a good meal to the sound of the pipes.
Santiago have a its very own atmosphere, a mix of religious and mystical feeling can be felt everywhere...
