Lamego, is one of most beautiful towns in the Alto Douro region. The Cathedral in the city center, from the early 12th century, is part of the legacy of the long Christian influence in the region. The castle, said to be of Moorish origins, still shows the keep (12th century) and the cistern (13th century). These monuments are testimony of the different cultural influences in the region at the time of the constitution of Portugal as a country.
Today you will discover this legacy, through a hike along the Balsemão River that will link history, religion, the wine culture and the stories of the people from the region. You will pass by an ancient chapel (probably 7th century), with a controversial origin, but some say it is visigoth. The end of this loop hike is at the top of the impressive granite staircase at the shrine to Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, in Lamego. A Local Festivity is hold every year in Our Lady of Remedies, Lamego, from late August to middle September
